Understand the political philosophy and history of the country. A significant lean toward liberal or conservative policy will affect how social and economical spheres interact within the public and private sectors.

David Nolan created a chart that segments and simplifies the political spectrum by gauging an individual’s alignment with various levels of personal and economic freedoms. Left wing individuals are classified by those who have a high desire for personal freedom (e.g. drug law leniency), but prefer that the government take an active role in economic issues (e.g. subsidies). The opposite political view in the Nolan Chart is the right wing individual who prefers less government participation in the economy (e.g. permitting/zoning), but desires certain social issues to be mandated (e.g. censorship). Conversely, Libertarians value freedom in both areas, while populists take the opposite extreme position.
